Hay Communications

Fibre Optics

Fibre is the best technology available to meet customers’ needs today, and in the future. Fibre optics are a good investment to keep Hay on the leading edge of technology and help us meet the growing bandwidth demand of our customers. It allows us to offer faster, more reliable internet, the highest quality digital television service and crystal-clear telephone connections. Fibre also ensures the delivery of innovative new services as they are developed.

Hay is building networks of fibre throughout the communities we serve. We will continue to install fibre along each road and to each small hamlet until we eventually have 100% fibre coverage in our service area.

Taking fibre into a community allows Hay to grow its customer base and ensure viability for the next 100 years. Check here to see where we are working and what is coming for the calendar year.

You’ve Heard Fibre is Coming, What Now?
    Fibre-to-the-Home Construction Stages

    State-of-the-Art Fibre Optics

You learn Hay Communications is bringing fibre-to-your-home! This can be very exciting, but you need to have some patience. The process to provide fibre-to-the-home, from start to finish can take up to a year. The weather, permits and several other factors play a role in how quickly things move along.

Here are the STEPS to building a new fibre network.

Connecting Your Community to the Main Fibre Network Ring

In order to bring fibre to your community a main TRUNK needs to be buried underground along roadways.

Underground vaults that house connection points will be installed on municipal property at specific points along the fibre route.

The fibre trunks will be connected to our main fibre network ring at several points.

A representative from either the construction company or Hay Communications will contact and visit in order to draw up a layout of your property and where utilities enter your home. They will be asking questions about any underground water or electrical features you may have on your property.

Once we have approval to access your property, service conduit will be installed.

During this stage, an orange 3/4″ conduit pipe pipe will be installed up to your home or business in the best possible place for easy access to the inside utility area; usually where your hydro and other services enter the building.

Fibre will be pulled through this conduit.

Installation equipment efficiently installs the conduit on your property, under driveways, etc creating very little disruption of the ground. Most times you cannot even tell that it has gone through your property.

If you feel you need a repair contact Hay Communications: 519-236-4333

Hay technicians will come shortly after the conduit is installed to pull the fibre up from the road to the building.

Service fibre is then connected to the main fibre trunk.

Service Installation – Work Inside Your Home or Business

Whenever possible we would prefer to access your home or business only once. When you contact us for services, enough time will be booked to install the ONT (Optical Network Terminal), battery back-up unit as well as the services you requested.

The ONT and battery are usually installed in your utility room. Because fibre optics cannot conduct electricity, you need a battery back-up to keep the network connection running when the electricity goes out. For this reason, an electrical outlet will need to be available in this area.

Be SURE to read “The POWER BEHIND YOUR FIBRE”  with IMPORTANT information about the battery back-up including how long it will last during an outage.

Installation of the ONT and battery as well as connection of the fibre will take approximately two hours.

Strands, Networks & Our Main Fibre Ring

Fibre optics are thin strands of very pure glass smaller than the diameter of a human hair. These strands carry digital information directly to homes and businesses through light waves, instead of electricity. When your residence or business is connected by fibre you will use only one of these then strands of glass which will provide virtually unlimited bandwidth.

    Community Networks

Our networks spread throughout our territory and is spreading into new territory. Fibre does not always have to be right into a home or business to allow greater bandwidth and a better quality of service. Fibre to the community shortens the distance that information has to travel over copper wiring. This effectively allows customers to access greater bandwidth and more services.

    Our Main Fibre Ring

Hay’s community networks all connect to our main fibre ring, and to electronic equipment situated in Dashwood. The fibre ring loops around our territory connecting us to other major networks to the north and south of us, as well as other local telecommunication companies that we partner with. The “ring” is used for redundancy, meaning that if there was a fibre cut or equipment failure, all information can be automatically rerouted in the other direction so there is minimal loss of service on either side of the break. The electronic equipment that transmits data signals is also in a fully backed-up facility to protect against power outages.

Once installed, fibre is upgraded to increase bandwidth by changing the electronics that create the light pulses, not by replacing the cable itself. That’s why fibre networks are said to be future-proof.

Even today’s most basic consumer’s bandwidth use, such as email and peer to peer file sharing, are guzzling more bandwidth than most current copper broadband networks can comfortably provide. Bandwidth demand is not shrinking, but continuing to grow at about a 60-80 percent compound annual growth rate. In response, broadband networks are growing, but it is obvious that a long-term network solution requires optical fibre.

In case of a power outage, this battery powers your telephone service for up to eight (8) hours. Internet and TV services will be disabled during a power outage, however, this unit may be plugged in to a generator to restore all services.

No – Hay will monitor your battery and replace it, if and when it needs to be changed. Replacement is required approximately every five years.

Weather in our area would significantly shorten the life of the battery. Also, being visible on the outside of the home increases the likelihood of damage or theft. For safety, security, longevity and to maintain a clean look on the outside of yor property, it is best to place this equipment on the inside of the home or business.

The ONT or Optical Network Terminal divides the light coming through the fibre into usable signals for telephone dial-tone, internet and digital TV. There are ethernet ports built in to this box for the various services.

If you live in a 236 (Zurich), 237 (Dashwood) or 238 (Grand Bend) exchange – Yes
We are replacing our entire copper network. This is required to keep your service up-to-date.

If you live in any other exchange (234 (Credition), 235 (Exeter) , 228 (Huron Park), 294 (Parkhill), 263 (Hensall) – No
However, it makes sense to install fibre to your property as we pass by with equipment when there isn’t any cost to you and it will increase your property value by having fibre. If you don’t want our services at this time you can still install the fibre. The conduit service pipe will be left coiled at the side of your house. (If you call, we will take it inside your home for future use.)

If you choose not to install fibre while we are passing your property and decide at a later time that you would like fibre, the costs to bring in equipment and get permits may have to be passed on to you.

If you live in a 236, 237 or 238 exchange -You are already connected to Hay and can get all our services including DSL internet.

If you live in any other exchange – Yes – If you want to have phone, internet or TV services from Hay Communications then you need to have a physical connection to our network.

You can get our cellular, security or long distance without a physical connection.

    Fibre Project Funding

UPDATE: Funding for the project was received and work has begun

November 2016 – In partnership with the government of Canada and the Province of Ontario, Hay Communications is working to extend high speed internet access to rural parts of Huron County.

This build will ensure residents and businesses are not disadvantaged by their geographic location and can participate fully in the digital economy.

Communities that will benefit: These communities in Southern Huron County will be connected with fibre if the funding is provided:

    Shipka
    Greenway
    Corbett
    Mount Carmel
As well as farms and residential homes passed between these towns
One local schools is also included

This project is with thanks in-part to the Small Communities Fund and the Building Ontario Infrastructure Program.

    Read the Press Release

Update Jan 2020 – Funding for this project will not be allocated to Hay Communications.

May 2017 – Connect to Innovate Huron is a project that would bring Fibre-to-the Home (FTTH) to approximately 3,877 under-served residents and businesses and a population of roughly 9700 in 11 distinctly rural project areas in Huron County. While a number of competing suppliers exist in every major population centre in the County, only local telecommunications Co-operatives have ventured onto rural concessions to provide last mile fibre to County residents.

The Federal Government’s Connect to Innovate program will invest $500 million by 2021, to ensure that rural and remote communities across Canada are well positioned to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by the digital age. CTI defined two types of last mile projects, those lacking any terrestrial infrastructure and those partially-served. To be considered, last-mile projects in partially served areas such as Huron County, must demonstrate need through surveys, speed tests or engineering studies.

To meet the project timeline, the Co-ops chose surveys backed with speed tests. More that 1700 surveys were completed. From this data, the Co-ops identified more than 100 CTI defined sectors in Huron that qualify for inclusion in a proposed joint CTI/Co-op funded initiative that could be built by the Co-ops within the CTI funding window between May 2017 and the end of March 2021.
