AI is being thrust upon us – like it or not.

There are a number of ways that I’m not too happy about this, and I eagerly turn AI off when given the option. However, I’m finding a few tools that are quite useful.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the picture app on my smartphone

I always ignored the image search feature thinking it was invasive AI, until one day I needed something quick. My son asked if I had “those” pics of his motorcycle. “Well yes”, I said, “no problem” … meanwhile thinking what year did I take those photos? As I started scrolling through my thousands of untagged images I got overwhelmed immediately. So I did it, I typed motorcycle, in the search field. Wow, about 20 photos came up instantly, and the ones I wanted were right there.

I think I like this particular use of AI.

New smartphones use artificial intelligence (AI), specifically computer vision and deep learning, to analyze, index, and search through pics in your gallery. This technology runs either on the device or in the cloud to identify objects, faces, and scenes by analyzing patterns, shapes, and textures within your photos.

When you take or save a picture, the phone’s AI immediately goes to work. It scans images, recognizing edges, colour and textures and identifies specific items, like a dog, car, the beach, and people, allowing you to search for these items instantly.

Advanced features will even understand relationships between objects, location and time. You can ask, “What beaches did i visit last year?” or “Show me photos of my dog on the beach,” and the AI understands the relationship between objects, locations, and time.

Of course there is facial recognition which comes in handy. AI can identify human faces and group them. I really liked this feature when it was my sister’s birthday and I wanted to post a pic of her and I.

You can start to go down the rabbit hole of AI being invasive, to no avail, but why not enjoy some of the features that are so freely thrust upon us. Try it.
